6 Days in Costa Rica: Family Travel Itinerary
Costa Rica has always been on my bucket list for its mix of adventure, relaxation, and pura vida lifestyle. I recently went on a 6-day trip (4 full days, 2 half days) with my family in September, and while this is technically the rainy, off-season, it turned out to be the perfect time to go. There were no crowds, prices were lower, and the daily rain showers only added to the experience—I actually loved it.
Here’s a breakdown of our trip, along with some reflections and moments I’ll never forget.
Day 1: Friday – Arrival in San José
- 8:30 pm: Check into Hotel Barceló.
- 9:30 pm: Dinner at Batanga Gastro Bar, where we tried the classic Chifrijo.
We arrived late in the evening, so our first night was simple—just enough time for dinner before resting up for the journey ahead.
Day 2: Saturday – Waterfalls, Coffee, and Relaxation in La Fortuna
- 9:00 am: Depart San José.
- Stop: Alajuela Falls and lunch at Organico Café, a vegetarian café with great healthy options.
- 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm: North Field Coffee & Chocolate Tour (Costa Rican coffee really does taste better when you see the process from bean to cup).
- 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm: Check into Casa Luna Resort in La Fortuna.
- 6:30 pm: Dinner at a local Soda : Restaurante Rodríguez. Ended the evening soaking in the resort’s jacuzzi.
Reflection: La Fortuna quickly became my favorite area—surrounded by lush forest and pure nature vibes. The resort here was our favorite stay of the trip, and I could easily have spent a few more days just relaxing in this town.
Day 3: Sunday – Arenal Volcano, Hot Springs & Spa
- 7:00 am: Breakfast at the resort.
- 8:30 am – 11:30 am: Hike through Arenal Volcano National Park.
- 12:30 pm: Relax in the hot springs—a perfect balance to the morning hike.
- 2:15 pm: Coffee and snack at Vita Café.
- 3:00 pm: Planned visit to La Fortuna Waterfall, but heavy rain (typical for September) closed it early. Tickets are $20 per person if you go.
- 3:30 pm: Spa massage instead—no regrets!
- 5:00 pm: Back to the resort to freshen up.
- 7:00 pm: Dinner at Pizza Ranch Fortuna.
Reflection: If I could go back, I’d make sure to visit La Fortuna Waterfall, rain or shine. Still, the spa made up for it.
Day 4: Monday – Ziplining in Monteverde & Sunset in Jacó
- 5:00 am: Drive to Monteverde.
- 8:00 am – 11:00 am: Adrenaline-filled zipline adventure with Montevedre Extremo Park.
- 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm: Lunch at Panadería Jiménez Café and souvenir shopping.
- 1:30 pm – 5:00 pm: Drove to Jacó with a stop at the Tárcoles Bridge (hello, crocodiles!). Traffic was heavy, so the 2.5-hour drive stretched to 4 hours.
- 6:00 pm: Check into Backyard Hotel.
- 7:00 pm: Dinner at The Spice Bar, an Indian restaurant.
- 8:30 pm: Evening stroll through Jacó.
Reflection: Monteverde is a place I would spend more time if I could redo the trip. The cloud forests felt magical, and we only got a small taste of it.
Day 5: Tuesday – ATV & Beach Vibes in Jacó
- 8:00 am: Easy start to the morning.
- 10:00 am – 1:00 pm: ATV ride with Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park to a private waterfall—one of the best adventures of the trip.
- 2:00 pm: Lunch at Tacobar.
- 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm: Coffee stop at Britt Café & Bakery and shopping in town.
- 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm: Sunset from Backyard Hotel.
- 7:30 pm: Dinner at Jerah Authentic Thai Cuisine.
- 8:30 pm: More time exploring Jacó’s nightlife.
Reflection: Costa Rica has wildlife everywhere—you’ll spot furry little animals even while dining at restaurants and cafés. Sharing meals with them became one of the trip’s unexpected joys.
Day 6: Wednesday – Back to San José & Departure
- 7:30 am: Packed up for the return journey.
- 9:30 am: Picked up lunch and returned our rental car.
- 10:30 am: Arrived at San José Airport for our flight back home.
Final Thoughts
Going in September meant dealing with daily rain, but honestly, it added charm to the trip. The misty forests, sudden showers, and quiet trails made the experience more authentic. Plus, fewer crowds and lower costs made it even better. One of the most unforgettable moments was spotting the stunning scarlet macaw-right in the middle of a gentle rain. Absolutely breathtaking!
Costa Rica is bigger than it looks on a map—traveling from place to place takes time, and ideally, you’d want 2–3 days in each area to soak it all in. We were daredevils and tried to do a lot in just a day or less, but it gave us a great taste of each region. A special thanks to my sisters, whose love and effort brought this journey to life. Your planning, laughter, and care made every moment unforgettable.

La Fortuna stole my heart, Monteverde left me curious for more, and Jacó gave us sunsets and beach-town energy. If you’re planning a trip, give yourself time to breathe, explore, and embrace pura vida at your own pace.
